Terms of Service
Rules and guidelines for using UpNepa
Last updated: April 2026
By creating an account or using UpNepa ("the Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. About UpNepa
UpNepa is a crowd-sourced, real-time power status tracking platform for Nigeria. Users report whether they have electricity ("light") at their location, and the platform aggregates these reports to show power availability across communities.
The Service is provided "as is" and relies on user-submitted data. We do not guarantee the accuracy of any power status information displayed.
2. Eligibility
- You must be at least 13 years old to use UpNepa
- You must provide accurate registration information
- You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials
- One person may only operate one account
3. User Reports and Content
When you submit a power status report, you agree that:
- Your report is truthful and reflects your actual power status at that location
- You are physically at or near the location you are reporting for
- You will not submit false, misleading, or spam reports
- Your report will be displayed publicly on the map with a masked username
- Your report data will be stored permanently for analytics purposes
Prohibited conduct: Submitting intentionally false reports, using automated tools to submit reports, attempting to manipulate zone status or consensus, creating multiple accounts to inflate report counts, or any activity that undermines the integrity of the platform.
4. Trust and Reputation System
UpNepa uses a trust scoring system to maintain data quality:
- Your trust score increases when your reports align with community consensus
- Your trust score decreases when your reports consistently contradict consensus
- Users with very low trust scores may be shadow-banned (their reports carry zero weight)
- Trust tier affects report weight and expiry time
We reserve the right to adjust trust scores, shadow-ban, or suspend accounts that engage in abusive reporting patterns.
5. Notifications
By using UpNepa, you may receive:
- Status reminders -- periodic prompts to update your power status
- Geofence alerts -- notifications when power status changes near your watched areas
- System notifications -- announcements, welcome messages, and updates
You can control notification preferences (channels, quiet hours, reminders) in your notification settings.
6. Location Data
UpNepa collects location data to provide its core service. By using the Service:
- You consent to the collection of your location when submitting reports
- Your coordinates are fuzzed (100m noise added) before storage for privacy
- You may set your location by clicking the map, searching an address, or using GPS
- Home location in your profile is optional and used for notification targeting
7. Intellectual Property
The UpNepa platform, including its design, code, algorithms, and branding, is owned by UpNepa. You may not:
- Copy, modify, or distribute the platform's source code without permission
- Use the UpNepa name or logo without written consent
- Scrape, crawl, or use automated tools to extract data from the platform
Power report data submitted by users is contributed to the community. Aggregated, anonymized zone-level statistics may be made available publicly.
8. Disclaimer of Warranties
UpNepa is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. Specifically:
- We do not guarantee the accuracy of power status reports (they are user-submitted)
- We do not guarantee continuous, uninterrupted access to the Service
- We are not affiliated with NEPA, PHCN, or any electricity distribution company
- Power status information should not be relied upon for critical decisions
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by Nigerian law, UpNepa and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including but not limited to damages from inaccurate power status information.
10. Account Suspension and Termination
We may suspend or terminate your account if you:
- Violate these Terms of Service
- Submit false or misleading reports repeatedly
- Engage in abusive, harassing, or fraudulent behavior
- Attempt to circumvent security measures or rate limits
You may delete your account at any time by contacting [email protected].
11. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Any disputes arising from these Terms shall be resolved in the courts of Nigeria.
12. Changes to These Terms
We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Material changes will be communicated via in-app notification. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.
